Ant farm gel colony- is there supposed to be mold too?

I recently purchased a illuminated gel colony ant farm for a 7 year old. When I opened it I noticed there is a mold like substance on the surface. I know the gel itself provides the food for the ants. My question is, is the mold like substance part of the food? or do I need to take it back?
